The Temple of Mars Ultor ('Mars the Avenger') was promised by Octavian (Augustus) after he defeated Caesar's murderers at Philippi in 42 BC. It was finished in 2 BC after twenty years' work and formed the centrepiece of the new Forum of Augustus. It survived largely intact until the 1600s when it was substantially dismantled. Today only three columns stand, overlooked by the massive firewall which protected it from Rome's fire-prone housing districts. This view is from behind the firewall.
