The execution of all of Beethoven´s five concertos is a tour de force which requires from this artist extreme concetration, a perfect knowledge of Beethovenˇs creative development as well as a good reserve of physical strength because the task is not only psychologically but also physically exhausting.
Emil Gilels undertook this challenging task on more than one occasion: Prague witnessed his execution of Beethoven´s concertos is two evenings in November 1958.
Gilels also played them elsewhere, and caused a sensation in Hamburg in 1969, for example, confirming his reputeof an outstanding Beethovenian interpreter which he did again in 1970 in Bonn on the occasion of the celebrations of 200 anniversary of the composer´s birth.
These recordings are probably the first in the series, they are, moreover, live recordings with immense documentary value.
