Im not a computer nerd, I barely managed to remember these simple commands from year 10 computer studies!
Sony Ericsson k800i phone memory problem fix - after scouring the internet for a week, and attempting, or reading about all these complicated methods that don't work. I cant believe how damn easy it could be fixed!
I am shit at narrating video which would have been quicker and easier but TOO BAD! - subtitles for you.
***typo in the video - I meant to say "can delete all 3gp files in ONE go, I forgot to type the ONE" ******
I edited the vid as fast as I could, and at the time I'd been awake for 2 days so I'm suprised any of it makes sense, I wanted to get the vid out there asap!
Note, at the time the vid was filmed, I'd just done a master reset.
ABOUT:
I recently discovered a problem with my Sony Ericsson k800i.
I copy pictures, video and music to the phone on a regular basis.
I deleted a bunch of files, so I could add new videos, but when I was trying to copy the files I would get an error message saying the phone memory was full!?
Even though I deleted the files!
I then tried to take some new pictures with the camera, and it would say "phone memory full, delete files?"
but there were no files to delete!
I tried error checking, virus scanning etc and found no way to fix it. After a google search I found a lot of other people having this same problem, with most being told to do a master reset (Which I did, and the problem was still there) or finally have the firmware flashed, which is both too much of a hassle for me and too hard to understand!!. Not to mention too much of a risk if it doesn't work and I end up with a phone that was useless!.
I noticed when I defragged the phone, the report would say something like "could not move \recycled\dg3.3gp" among other files.
I could not find the directory "recycled" anywhere so I tried something else, out of sheer boredom, and desperation.
I opened the command prompt.Changed to to the drive letter the phone is assigned. then typed "CD RECYCLED".
Which opened the "recycled" directory.
Then I typed "DIR" to show the directory contents (type DIR/W/P if you have a heap of files that wont fit in one page, and you cant scroll up or down)and there they were. a whole bunch of pics, vids, folders I had deleted off the phone, even after the master reset they were still there.
I typed in one of the file names of the .3gp vids, which actually opened the video in quicktime so I could see what it was.
for the images, I had to copy them to a folder I made in c drive (Something easy like c:\pics), then in the directory type "copy *.jpg c:\pics\" which sent them all to a folder I could open in explorer, and view the pics to see what they were., yet again images I had deleted.
SO. back in the recycled directory, I simply typed "del *.3gp" which deleted all the 3gp files, and changed the extension to jpg, or whatever files are in there to delete them too
I even had 2 folders that were in there, that contained pics, and simply typed "rmdir NAME" change NAME to the
folder name obviously, and what do you know. now I have all my memory back
hope this helps.
this vid shows how to delete files one by one.
*********when you are in the recycled directory, you can simply type "RD /S /Q \recycled\" to delete all files and
folders inside, without deleting the recycled folder itself**************
I also made a tiny batch file that you copy straight to your phone, and it wipes the recycled folder clean (but leaves the recycled folder there so the phone is not effected)
email me an I will send it, and instructions to you
If you know simple dos commands you wont need the batch file, it is just easier for people not familiar with the command prompt.

hmmm. Its been ages since I did this (over a year) and I'v since bought a Nokia 5800 - frikkin awesome fone) - if you are using windows/xp etc. get to the folder in a normal explorer window, go to folder options and uncheck the box that says "hide protected operating system files" and you should hopefully see the hidden recycled folder (or one like it) appear. this avoids the hassle of going thru all this dos shit, but I have had trouble just trying to right click n delete files this way )

@336Torana

damn sorry mate - I'v never owned a W705 but I'd assume the firmware would be similar. when you got to the memory card ie. F:\ - did you type "dir" to get a directory listing? keep note what directories are there. then in the same directory (memory card) type "dir /ah" (don't forget the space) this should show hidden directories. (I just found this out lol)

It could be named something other than RECYCLED - maybe "trash", "bin", and so on...
