This is actually a fictional scenario where Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu are actively warring with each other after the Alliance is dissolved; To keep each other's backs vulnerable, Yuan Shao allies with Liu Biao, while Yuan Shu allies with Gongsun Zan. In response, Yuan Shao orders Cao Cao to guard Yanzhou in preparation to attack Gongsun Zan together; Yuan Shu, in turn, orders Sun Jian to attack Liu Biao so Yuan Shu could personally attack Yanzhou with his army to nullify the strategem.

I think this scenario is after dong zhuo retreated from luo yang to chang an, and the aliance falls.

Yuan shu orders sun jian to attack liu biao (and he dies in this attack), Yuan Shao begins to fight with Gongsun Zan.
