When inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen founded FIRST -- For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology -- he envisioned the national robotics competition as a sport. In many ways that is what it has become. About 61 teams, 43 of them from New Jersey, competed in the 13th annual FIRST competition at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton on Feb. 27 and 28. After being shipped a box of parts, student teams were given six weeks to build a robot for the contest. Teams are sponsored by local companies and raise tens of thousands of dollars to build their robots and enter regional competitions. The winners of the New Jersey regional were 'The MidKnight Inventors,' of West Windsor-Plainsboro regional school district, Bridgewater's 'Team Overdrive' and 'The Saunders Droid Factory,' of Yonkers, NY.
