About STOP THE VIOLENCE

The Stop the Violence Movement (STVM) is a non-profit organization deeply rooted in the Hip Hop community with a mission to advance an ongoing series of movements to diminish global violence through education, critical dialogue, grassroots organizing and direct action.
The STVM achieves its mission by providing organized programs, workshops, symposiums and media campaigns that heighten the awareness of the effects of violence, create multi-generational dialogue and supplies parent and youth oriented educational tools for conflict resolution.
The STVM is calling upon fellow celebrities to take action. We are calling upon the mass media to address the images they put forth. We are calling for balance! Balance within ourselves, balance in the media, in our communities, in the world.

The first step in preventing violence is to understand it. Violence is an unjust or unwarranted exertion of force or power. Violence is the diplomacy of the incompetent. Violence is unnecessary and costly. Violence kills what it intends to create. Violence is any activity that is consciously used to hurt oneself, another individual or group of people, whether through mind, body or spirit.

"The question is no longer between violence and non-violence it is between non-violence and non-existence."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 1987, Afrika Bambaataa called a historic meeting at the Latin Quarter night club where he urged the Hip Hop community to become more politically and socially active. Personally influenced by the meeting, KRS-ONE went to work releasing a 12" single entitled "Stop The Violence." The popularity of this song gave rise to a swelling community of conscious Hip Hop. Then in1989, KRS-ONE, along with Ann Carli (VP of A&R at Jive records) and author/musicologist Nelson George, developed an all-star project that would become a legendary Hip Hop peace anthem, "Self-Destruction".
As KRS-ONE said, "We got ourselves together so that you could unite and fight for what's right." The recording boldly denounced Black-on-Black violence with quotes like this one from Kool Moe Dee "I never ever ran from the Ku Klux Klan and I shouldn't have to run from a black man." The proceeds from "Self-Destruction" were given to the Urban League for community programs and made it cool to 'Stop The Violence.'
In response to the increased violence and confusion of today, Hip Hop activist/philosopher, KRS-ONE has revitalized the 'Stop The Violence' movement. He is calling upon the global Hip Hop community to take responsibility for the way in which conflict is resolved.

The arts yield a powerful influence on our collective culture. We are a collective of artists, activists, entertainers and educators who understand that we are powerful role models. We are taking responsibility. We intend to combine the power of the media and the arts to create our "hammer" so that we may shape our reality, a non-violent reality.

"Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it." - Bertolt Brecht

  • How will history judge this generation? Will they say our people have advanced the way Dr. Martin Luther King Jr envisioned, or will it be that we are a culture or ethnic group that continues to idolize, and embrace a distructive behaviorial pattern without boundaries or moral foundation? Don't tell me that this is what we have become? Thugs, pimps, gangsters, ho's, bit__ , mobsters, drug dealers, unruly, drop-outs, pleasure toys and dead beat fathers? Is this the future of our people???

  • So why do you think that as a percentae Black males dominate the prison system? Why do you think that black males between the ages of 16 25 have the highest rate of homicide. Why do you think suffer more from chronic diseases AIDS, Stokes, Diabetes adn High Blood Pressure? America is changing, and this is the transition period. White men have dominated other races, countries and culture that they are threatened by. Its not just poice brutality, its education, its economics its our socialization.

  • @babyheru Word !

  • i FIND that a lot of this " violence " is just unawareness of the situations we all go through. Psychological warfare is what we live in and around everyday. We stress it, it numbs us, we learn how to work with the knowledge of these things, and doors open. When we don't understand ORIGIN of things we tend to die and get shuffled into statistics. Feelings, events, things we fight for, ideals, crack, cocaine.... damn foolz ! They got yall like some muthafuckin ROBOTS !

  • Stopping the Violence is more than just making a song. YOU HAVE TO MEAN IT. I can only think that brothaz and sistaz in this movement, whether they were ignorant before or not, can better their selves by BEING their SELVES in THEIR MIND . I think it's hard for people, who lack discipline, to all of a suddenly be THE BEST ! BASICALLY BLACK FOLK, STOP PROJECTING YOUR FEELINGS ON OTHERS WHEN YOU ARE WRONG, AND GOD DAMMIT, STOP BEING PUSSIES ABOUT BEING YOURSELVES. YOU DON'T NEED TO WATCH EVERYONE !

  • Too many lives are being lost every single day. We need a change and inspiration. Every be sure to visit cpwc.bandpage.com for the FREE Download of "Please Stop The Violence" by Chris Phoenix & Walkin Contradiction f. Dawn Williams. Good music can mobilize the masses. BMR

  • Right here where i live (MTL-514ac) A lot has happened in the past, people are slowly rebuilding the city in a better way, a lot has happened here in the past, things and times are changing, some people tend to evolve some only does not seems to, there is a lot of mind struggling things that are happening everywhere around this world, different countries, religions, leaders, political views, mafias, syndicates, drug smuggling, name it, even the physician is selling pills and balm for rashes....

  • While I commend KRS for doing this, I seriously have to ask a question: what did the cats that was YOUNGER that were involved in this recording actually learn? And if they did learn something, why isn't it EVIDENT in their lyrics? Why isn't it evident in their videos? Sometimes I really wonder about alot of the next generation. I too, have spent some time trying to teach younger cats about things like KRS, and our history, and alot of times, they dont' seem to give a fuck. It's frustrating.

  • This very postive move i have the frist 12inch vinyl from 88 good to see KRS 1 has carried it on with this and got all skools toghter and peeps in the Hip Hop and rap world on this project, peace Geebeats.
