Jessica Censotti is the July 2009 artist. Her work is inspired by motherhood and how women are constant providers for the earth. Her sculptures are serene yet send a powerful message. In her show, Mother Land, Censotti aims to shed light on the atrocities of FGM (female genital mutilation). A portion of the sales from this month's artwork will benefit MWAVIDO- an organization in Kenya that is building a refuge house for young Maasai girls who say "NO!" to female circumcision. I think it's wrong to fund an organization that tries to discourage girls in Kenya from getting circumcised. Better, surely, to provide funding to those who perform the operations, to ensure as many girls as possible benefit from them.
