  • Update on these bees: Two days ago I watched as they gathered in numbers in front of their hive. They became very excited and many in numbers.

I could tell they were getting ready to swarm. I got another hive box ready and the next day collected the swarm who moved just 6 feet down the hill on my fence. I gathered them up, queen and all, and they are now making themselves busy in their new home.

  • Just to update on this hive: They now have a super and have filled it up 3/4 of the way. They are growing in numbers, have a strong queen and are very gentle.

I am very proud of them! lol

  • Nice work on this extraction, how is this hive doing? I assume this couch was outside when the bees colonized?

  • The couch bees are doing great- I just checked them two days ago. I didn't see any action coming from their hive at night- i even tapped the entrance and nobody came to check. I listened w/ my ears close to the box-nothing. I got concerned so I opened the lid and BUZZZZZZZZZ and many in the colony- so they are doing very well- they were just busy keeping their brood warm I suppose. Good girls!

  • I just did a thorough check on this hive today (Feb 18 2010) they are doing great.

New brood, lots of comb and honey and just gave them a super. They over wintered very well (well, as much winter as we can have in San Diego anyhow!)and are very nice in temperment.

  • This couch was stored on somebody's front porch- (I guess they thought a nice plant had been too many times) So the bees thought it looked mighty comfy and made it their home - the couch owner just didn't want to do anything about it until the problem just got too big and the neighbors started to complain- then he couldn't afford the problem- so the San Diego Beekeepers group donated the extraction- aren't we nice!!?? lol our local Channel 8 news covered it, they used this video in their story.

  • Looks like a great group of people!

  • did you get any honey from this extraction?

    I love the music!

  • Now that was one of the funner bee keeping video's I've seen to date.

Just one question, who had to sit on the couch and find out there was a bee hive in there?

    Great video.
