The Invisible Cyclist is a new series of videos from citycycling magazine which are simply aimed at showing things that happen on the roads which highlight the disregard for safety, whether through negligence or deliberate action, of various road users.

It is hoped that these clips will not put people off cycling, as the benefits far outweigh anything else. But we want all road users: cyclists; motorists; and pedestrians, to rediscover a certain respect for each other and each other's rights.

Follow the rules. Be nice. It couldn't be simpler.

Send your 'invisible cyclist' clips to seeme@citycycling.co.uk with brief details of who, where and when for inclusion here.

  • You were turning right, but you moved to the left. I once clipped a guy on a motorcycle because that guy did the same stupid thing you did. Was on the right lane, then move to the left lane. Me, on the right lane overtook him. The moment I overtook him, he hit me on the side trying to turn right, and I assume he didn't look in the mirror as well.

All in all, if you were turning right, why the hell did you move to the left? You were not invisible. He thought you were going to turn left...

  • @Str4t0sPh3rE Er, I moved left because he pulled out of the side street and if I hadn't he would have gone straight into me!

  • You were way to lait to join the right hand part of the lane, you seemed to go out of your way to become a victim, you also tool the licence plate of the car that YOU CUT UP

  • Erm. Car pulls put of side road forcing cyclist to swerve to the left of the lane when he had been in the centre. How did the cyclist manage to 'cut up' the car?

The cyclist had right of way on the main road with the car stopped at a stop line on a side road. He pulled out of that side road just as the cyclist drew level with it, which is just after passing through the road narrowing....

I can see I might need to draw a diagram for this one!

  • I think some elaboration is needed.

At 21s the cyclist passes through a narrowing just a few metres before a road on the right. The cyclist is therefore in the centre of the lane.

At this point the car pulls out of the road on the right. The reaction of the cyclist can be seen at 28s, veering to the left to avoid the car which has pulled out.

The car was not behind the cyclist, but pulled out from the right when the cyclist was in the middle forcing the cyclist left to avoid a collision.

  • The cyclist is clearly too far to the left to prepare for his right turn.

Early correct lane positioning would have prevented this kind of problem.

  • It's a taxi, what did you expect?

  • I find it interesting how many people bash cyclists for whatever reason. Granted not all cyclists ride properly/safely. However, that being said not all motorists do either but rarely do you hear anyone complain as much or as loudly against other motorists about such things, but always so quick to point fingers at those on bicycles and come up with justifications in order to seem superior to their fellow man.

  • Ah man - if I had a camera mounted to my bike in NYC. The modo in NYC for drivers is "Its not illegal unless you get caught"

  • Early in the video here is no room to drive a car in the cyclist's lane because of the obstruction that narrows the lane. The driver of the car that pulls up on the right probably does not expect vehicular traffic in the part of the roadway that is too narrow for normal vehicular traffic, but that's exactly where the cyclist was riding - no wonder he was overlooked.

Lane usage and positioning has much more to do with being visible than most cyclists realize.

    See the CyclistLorax channel.

  • Dude, that's the least of your problems! Why is everyone driving on the wrong side of the road?!?!?!

Okay, just kidding, but I had to watch the video twice, and I'm still not sure it's engaging my instincts correctly just because of the left-right thing.
