In these dire times how necessary it is grab a little space and fresh air, get one's hands dirty and grub for a little fresh produce. This is my rented patch down in Chiswick, by the Thames. A small miracle of a place! As an epilogue I've added an admirable poem reading - not mine - on the wonder of growing veggies: Anna Wigley's 'GROUND' is itself a small marvel.

The rent increase this year is over 300% for me (a sign of the times) but for 10 rods-worth of heaven. That's about 55 yards or 76 metres from end to end..

  • Man, if you find you can no longer afford the rents where you are come over to us. I'd sure appreciate you wielding some of your magic over our pathetic patch! Beautiful, Fred, well done. You are an example to us all.

  • @andrewnorris2 What a generous invitation and comment, Andrew! I have to confess you only see the best bits in the vid. I'll have to get round to making a factual documentary one day on the voracious, local wood pigeons, (amazing they can still take off) the fat slugs, the swarms of white fly, the raider parakeets and the creeping weeds in every direction...but its still worth it!

  • It must be lovely to garden in your spot! A beautiful patch it is, Fred. You're so lucky. My family and I drove through Chiswick last January by chance, and ended up (also by chance) with our little ones at Kew Gardens. San Francisco is big on urban gardening, too, but the closest I got to it is nearly putting up potted plants on the roof of our building! One yearns for a real garden, loam... Gratitude is on my mind due to Thanksgiving coming soon here, and this video fits my mood! Nice! :) - E

  • @HerAeolianHarp Sweet comment thanks E. A few weeks back had the pleasure of attending a friend's wedding in Cambridge House which is part of Kew Gardens. Also got to perform 'When in disgrace with Fortune' at the ceremony!! I'm sure you will get your own patch in the end.

    Warm greetings!

  • Is this Chiswick, Borneo?

    Wonderful.

  • @harryfaber thanks. Only for a few short hours this year! Cheers!
