This is the once famous music that catapulted the 1948 film to the status of a #1 box office hit in Britain. Rota adapted the first movement to a symphony he was working on, the Sinfonia Sopra una Canzone d'Amore, and added an overture for the film. It is sung by Tito Gobbi.

  • what time was this piece created ?

  • The Symphony on a Song of Love was first written in 1947 but not orchestrated and premiered until 1972. The film version was 1948 or 1949. A bit of La Montanara also features in it, which I believe was written in the '30s.

  • Is the film still available? I love watching old films and in particular, this one with such a beautiful haunting melody, the fabulous Gobbi and the romantic story. I do not care if it is corny by today's standards, I love it anyway.

    Thank you for this.

  • There is a copy on DVD released through Bel Canto Society, but the quality is not what you might expect from a DVD. They're `non-profit' and in any event it's better quality than this.

  • The VCI DVD has dreadful sound.

  • This was a regular Sunday afternoon film on BBC when I was a child. The tune has always stuck with me. This brings back pleasant memories.

  • Looking at the replies, let me tell you all with tin ears, that Tito Gobbi was a GREAT baritone singer, not a tenor. He was certainly matched by Maria Callas in their famous Covent Garden Tosca in the early sixties.

  • my grandparents met on the set of this film in 1948. The old photographs are amazing!...and so is this movie of course! :-)

  • I LOVE THIS MUSIC SO MUCH

  • My grandmother loved this

  • What a nice clip. This is also a very enjoyable piece in it's Piano Solo edition.

  • What a great treasure!

  • I have to agree that Tito Gobbi was great singer. baritone with ringing tenor notes. Hear him sing the Barberr of Seville, such dexterity - great, great, great.

  • How wonderful - I used to see this film on TV when I was a kid and always adored the operatic music, but haven't heard it for at least 25 years. Thank you!
