A demonstration on the generation of a high voltage spark by a step-up transformer having a 500-turn primary and 23000-turn secondary. The applied voltage is 300V and the generated voltage is ideally 23000/500 x 300V =13.8 kV but it is less practically. Demonstrated by Mustafa Daif with the assistance of Ali Taha and Yosri Idrees.

  • Hi can you tell me the purpose of the steel core in a step up transformer?

  • The purpose is to obtain high flux produced by minimum energy (current). Without the steel core, we would need higher current to produce the same flux. The steel core collects the magnetic flux instead of being wsted in air, although some portion of the flux is lost in the air.

  • Ah thanks, will any type of steel work?

  • Yes but the current value differs depending on a factor known as permeability of the material

  • Would an iron nail work?

  • Yes.
