On Tuesday 17th March 2009, I visited the Hawkstone estate in the company of representatives of the TRA. I was kindly welcomed into the homes of residents who wanted to show me the evidence of widespread serious problems with the condition of the buildings which had not yet been refurbished.
These flats presented examples of the problems, which were present to some degree or another in all of the properties and were not isolated examples. The residents also spoke in heartfelt terms about the slowness of the Council dealing with really serious problems such as water ingress and drain resurgences and how they felt that the estate was being left in limbo while the Council dithered as to whether to rebuild or refurbish the flats. In the meantime the estate is continuing to deteriorate as the Council fails to deliver competently interim repairs.
There was widespread cynicism and despair about the continuing deterioration of the estate and the Councils seeming inability or unwillingness to tackle its long-standing problems.

Val seems like a nice person but I have lived in the area for a few years and I have never even heard of her until a leaflet came through my door today. I have written to the Labour party several times, they don't even bother to answer. Now an election is coming I get a leaflet! Simon Hughes (Lib Dem) by contrast is highly visible and feels like part of the community. However Southwark has some of the most disgusting public housing I have ever seen, most need bulldozed. But who REALLY cares?
