  • Steve is the best vocalist Lawrence Welk ever had. I just love him and wish he's stayed with the group much longer than he did! Thanks for posting.

  • Great voice. But weren't those suits of the mid 60's awful? Tight pants,

skinny lapels and ties. And their trying to bring that back!

  • I ADORE THIS VOICE!!!!!!!!

    THX 4 POSTING!

PLZ TELL ME...WHERE HE IS NOW?

  • @bigpatrick100

    YES! I AGREE..........

  • What a marvelous voice and he's only 25 here. His phrasing is superb. He reminds me of the male big band singers of the 1940s. Steve's vocal quality at times sounds a lot like early Sinatra, and at times like Dick Haymes, etc. Steve Smith was born 20 years too late. He was the best vocalist that Welk ever had as far as I am concerned. I lked Jimmy Roberts - but he was of a different type. Welk at the time should have had Steve sing at least 2 numbers a show, not Bob Lido for heaven's sake!

  • This was in the late 1960's, during the height of the Vietnam War. He was in his early 20's. It would be interesting to know how he managed to escape the draft. I am not necessarily criticizing him. I am just curious.

  • Was this at the Sierra Ski Lodge? I would love to meet him. My wife and I have admired his voice all these many years.

  • Talked to him tonite. Going back to his martini bar to hear Dave Johns, Shelly Miller, their son, Tanner Johns and Hank Alrich playing and singing together.

  • His voice is like silk!
