'Pan' was intended to stand for pangolin (cool animal, look it up), but the hacks that translated this game took a dictionary translation of 'pan' - a Japanese loanword for 'bread,' through the Portuguese 'paõ' (compare also Spanish 'pan,' French 'pain,' and Italian 'pane').

That's what I've been able to divine, at least (am compiling big list of VietCrys names and likely origins, as well as moves and items).
