How To Get Free Airline Tickets

Recorded 07/19/09: This video explains how I got free airline tickets. I guess the tickets aren't totally free since you may have to inconvenience yourself in your travel plans, but you could still come out a winner if you play the situation right. I got an $800 voucher to give up my seat on a flight from Chicago ORD to Prague PRG in March 2006. The original ticket cost me $650, but the airlines gave me an $800 voucher to fly out the next day and they diverted me to connect in London LHR for a day before reaching my final destination in Prague PRG. They comped my hotel in Chicago ORD and in London LHR. In this video, I gave up my seat in Washington Dulles IAD to fly out an hour later for a round trip U.S. domestic ticket. I had to connect in Zurich ZHR and only arrived at my final destination in Geneva GVA two hours later. It was totally worth it. I was super jet lagged in this video. Travel light and you might get lucky too.

Look for a flight in advance that has only a few seats empty. That flight will be over booked and you will get a free ticket. Plus usually a first class seat on the next available flight.

@erinnelson92 Getting free airline tickets as mentioned in the video is being at the right place and the right time... just pure luck. You have to be ready if and when the opportunity rises to give up your seat in an over booked flight. Then the airlines sometimes awards free tickets in exchange for inconveniencing your time. I came out a winner on two occasions.

Another tip: On a full flight, offering your seat (as a single traveler) sometimes pays off in a 1st class or business class upgrade. I've been able to do this at least 3 times!
