The Broadway production, directed by Tom Moore and choreographed by Patricia Birch (who later directed the ill-fated sequel of the film adaptation of Grease), opened on June 7, 1972 at the Broadhurst Theatre, where it ran for five months before transferring to the Royale Theatre. It remained there for more than seven years before moving to the Majestic Theatre to complete its record-setting 3,388-performance run. The original cast included Barry Bostwick as Danny and Carole Demas as Sandy, with Adrienne Barbeau, Timothy Meyers, and Walter Bobbie in supporting roles. Replacements later in the run included Jeff Conaway, Marilu Henner, Peter Gallagher, Ilene Graff, Judy Kaye, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Jerry Zaks, and Treat Williams. Richard Gere was an understudy for many roles in this production, including Danny Zuko, Teen Angel, and Vince Fontaine.

Not to mention, these guys ARE the original Sandy and Danny. The notes they are singing is actually was is written down for the original show. John and Olivia are the ones who changed them up

It's a bit of a shocker that Barry Bostwick's recognized for being the mayor in Spin City, and Brad Majors from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I first became interested in seeing Barry Bostwick in Grease, due to my obsession with the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The main reason, however, that Grease is so popular isn't as much because of the quality of the show, but more because John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Barry Bostwick, however, was the selling point for me being a Rocky Horror fan.

holy cow..thanks so much for posting this!!! I always wondered about Carole as Sandy, I was like 2 years old when the show debuted...I only got to know Carole from Magic Garden

The original Broadway Danny and Sandy, that is. The show originated in Chicago with a completely different cast and a more raw blue collar feeling, Marilu Henner was the original Marty in that production.

After the beginning, I kinda got into the song. Even though it's slower and alot different from the movie, this original is actually pretty good.
