I was filming some people fooling around on Orange Ave after the bars closed. You can hear the sound of a collision. I panned over and got a shot of the taxi fleeing the scene. I was also able to interview the driver of the vehicle. It was an interesting story that kept getting better. OPD tried to verbally provoke me. This is an interesting video because it displays a strategy seldom understood by independent media. The officers attempted to antagonize me and thus provoke me into a confrontation where I would be a nuisance or disorderly. Either of these behaviors are enough for the police to say you're hindering their investigation/activities. At that point they have the authority to ask an individual to leave or back up to a place where the video/pictures are controlled by them. This isn't legal advice and you have to answer police when they ask you a question. Stay calm and understand what they are saying, because they will often enough say patronizing or out-right rude things in order to make you react in a aggressive or threatening way. Sometimes they'll pepper these comments in with legitimate questions, remain level-headed, remain silent if you have the choice, and continue recording.

  • Barely a block - it was a bold move from the cabbie.

  • The piggy thinks filming him is illegal? What a dumb fuck..

  • "...you have to answer police when they ask you a question."

Not correct. Have you forgotten about the 5th Amendment?

  • Looks like it took the Gestapo (OPD) a while to show up, and if they dont like being filmed then maybe they shoudnt have taken a job that requires them to be out in PUBLIC where people tend to have cameras. Nice coverage Tristan!

  • isn't this a block up the way from a police substation? or is that the next street over?
