The North Adams Fire Department and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts burned up a simulated dormitory room on Monday to vividly demonstrate the dangers of fire. The drill was made possible through an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to MCLA and included taping the burn for a college awareness campaign.
Constructed by the MCLA facilities department, the 8x10 three-sided room including a typical dorm bed with fire-resistant mattress, computer monitor, standard furniture, posters, papers, clothing and curtain. Once the curtains caught, it was a matter of minutes before the entire room was in flames - even the mattress.
