Government voices 'real concerns' over Kenya election 'irregularities'
LONDON (AFP) — Foreign Secretary David Miliband on Sunday expressed "real concerns" at "irregularities" reported in the Kenyan presidential elections.

Miliband urged leaders in Nairobi to work together to address the irregularities noted by European Union observers and others, in a joint statement with International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander
The pair said deaths in election-related violence -- in which 18 people have died since Thursday's ballot -- had marred the election in the former British colony, which became independent in 1963.

"This is a pivotal moment for Kenya, a time when the democratic process and election outcome has to be seen to be fair in the eyes of the Kenyan people," they said.

"We congratulate Kenyan voters for conducting their vote in an orderly and dignified manner.

"But we have real concerns at the irregularities reported by the EU observers and others.

"We call on all Kenya's political leaders and democratic institutions to work together to address those concerns, seriously, in a spirit of unity, and in a way which will bring the respect and support of the Kenyan people.

"Those leaders must also ensure the safety of Kenya's people -- the tragic deaths this weekend have marred an otherwise peaceful election.

"That violence must not be repeated."

Britain looks forward to working with a legitimately elected government of Kenya, they added.

Mwai Kibaki was sworn in Sunday for a second term as Kenyan president as supporters of pipped opposition leader Raila Odinga rioted in major cities saying the election was rigged.

EU election observers in Kenya said Sunday that the country's electoral commission had failed to ensure the vote's credibility.

  • you know what Kenya needs.....Wangari Maathai!!! THAT is who should have ran for presidency!! I will continue to pray for the day that she will lead Kenya into a prosperous future!! If Liberia can do it then so can Kenya! You dont win a Nobel Peace Prize for being a corrupt politician! She has been setting an example of what a real leader should be, now if only those pig headed men would listen!

  • When all of you learn that you will only live in this world for 70 years if you are lucky enough that is,then you will realise some things are sheer foolishness to fight for. You came here uchi and you will go uchi. As for me am taking care of my soul its the only thing am assured will take me to the next level. "my people perish for luck of knowledge" says the lord.

  • People need to think before they act. Do you think either Kibaki or Raila care about you? Do you think they will say "oh thank you for killing or the kikuyu or luo and now I will personally give you this huge sum of money and you and your family will be set for life". I come from a multi racial multi tribal family, and this BS has been the worst tragedy that has ever happened to my family. Raila lost the election and still wants to be president. He should accept defeat and try again next time.

  • are stupid or what you all know tha lios are only known for one thing and that is rioting if they take over state house thats the end of kenya as we know it

  • uko brainwashed kabisa. stop calling for war.

raila lost and no amount of domo is going to change that fact. please accept it. if he has complaints, go to court.

  • ati people r negotiating with annan and the muthafucka kibaki is transporting mungiki in eldoret ruto kanyaga yote fikisha hao naivasha na maasai wa take over sukuma hadi central nairobi ni ya maasai, until they learn to respect other kenyans.

  • mine is simple dont waste time with kiuks, tumewavumilia ya kutosha, luos voted for kibs have u seen a kiuk voting for raila nada, saizi other tribes have nothing so chafua yote kila mtu akose, nairobi pia ni ya maasai, raila ongeza joseph kony wa l.r.a kwa equation the acholi are our cousins, leta bunduki vijana wamalize kazi.

  • PNU got around 30 mp's. You are forgetting that Kanu, Safina, Narc-K, Sisi kwa Sisi, Ford-K etc. were all backing Kibaki also.

4 million plus Kenyans voted for Kibaki. 4 million plus for Raila. That is who Kenyans like.

  • These are false results you have my friend. The truth is coming to light. Kibaki won 4 provinces, Raila won 4. Kibaki's lowest score was around 15% in Nyanza, Raila scored 2% in Central and 6% in Eastern.

Molo does not have 68,000 eligible voters. Please research your facts.

  • WHERE ARE YOU FROM?there are 8 provinces if you dont know.and among the 8 raila led in 5 and nairobi he got almost the same.why would you find that eligible voters in molo are 68,000 while kibaki gets 120,000 did the dade vote for him or am i wrong in this and does it mean that in molo there are no supporters of kalonzo leave alone raila?
