On an April 18, 1995 broadcast of Coast to Coast AM, Art Bell interviewed a 21-year-old man by the name of Michael Markham [possibly spelled Marcum]. Though I did not listen to the interview during its oriignal broadcast, I did have the pleasure of being introduced to Markham and his strange story during a "best of" replay in October of 1999. However, I do remember seeing a short blurb about the initial incident on a national news broadcast just days after it happened in early 1995. So this is a documented case.

Affectionately christened "Mad Man" by Art Bell, Michael Markham was arrested on January 29, 1995, after stealing six unused transformers from a power station near Kansas City, Missouri. According to Markham, he originally used a conventional device to create a simple "Jacob's ladder" for no other purpose than his own amusement. To generate the arcing effect, he used a laser from a CD player. It was then that he noticed a strange shimmering circle appear above the arc. Intrigued, he threw a screw into the strange electrical manifestation to see what would happen. According to Markham, the screw vanished into thin air before reappearing about a half second later. He deduced that the disappearance of the screw could only be explained by it having traveled a half second into the future, and that he had thus inadvertently constructed a crude time machine.

The following is an excerpt from the actual Art Bell broadcast:

According to Markham, he became so obssessed with this idea that he had created a time machine, that he decided to steal the six transformers to create giant Tesla coils. During his subsquent experiments, the massive amount of energy he was tapping through the transformers caused brown outs throughout his neighborhood. It was not long before the stolen transformers were discovered, and he was arrested by the police. He was released from jail on probation shortly before appearing on Art Bell, and said that he intended to continue his experiments, albeit legally. About a year later, "Mad Man" Markham appeared on the Art Bell show for a second, longer interview, and claimed to still be experimenting with a now more sophisticated "time machine", even upping the anti to incredible proportions. Apparently the electro-magnetic "vortex" he had now generated was large enough for a man to walk through. Art Bell compared what Markham was doing to the Philadelphia Experiment, and suggested that he throw an insect or animal through the vortex to test it before walking through it himself. The interview ended with Markham claiming to be on the cusp of generating the desired amount of voltage. "Mad Man" Markham has not been heard from since.

Now more than a decade since his last interview, just what did ever happen to "Mad Man" Markham? Did he realise the futility of his likely boondoggle, and decide to persue more productive endeavors? Did he run afoul of the law again, this time to be put away for years? Did he foolhardily attempt to actually enter the electrical field, killing or even vaporizing himself? Or did he, against all probability, actually succeed, and is now in a past or future time, or perhaps other dimension?

"Mad Man", if you are out there, let us know.

Times up.

  • @dreamlandnightmare my bad...cheers

  • I don't normally post "hater comments" but seriously... I know you think the "altered voice" thing sounds cool and mysterious, but it's just annoying and stupid. You don't exactly need to "hide your identity" to post Art Bell episodes. Kinda pathetic......

    NERD FAIL.

  • Maybe this is why the cat was a sacred animal in ancient Egypt?

  • Dude whats up with the fucked up voice I cant hear SHIT. and then it goes to normal for a couple of minutes and then back to the fucked up voice...lame. If you have the REAL FULL AUDIO let me know cuz I am fascinated by this topic.

  • Holy hell, I never heard about this. I live in St. Joseph, maybe 4 miles from that south 13th street address.

I'm gonna start asking around about this guy...

    Fackin' cool

  • @tec9z28 I've looked everywhere, for such a photo. Still no luck. =( Does anybody know which decade and county(or better yet, town) this was to have allegedly happened? Even if not linked to "Mad Man", it would still be a very significant photo. Side note: I never could accept the Titor story... It never felt right, to me...
