This video teaches the way a large collection of water can be used to harness the power of the sun. This simple approach offers a simple inexpensive solution for developing nations offering solar cooking and water distillation for about 3 hours of optimal use.

  • CUT SOME TREES????????

  • @howtoguy17 Tree Limbs:-) Hurricane season. Oaks need to be trimmed or they can spit in bad places when exposed to wind after long stretches of not being tested by wind. We have 300+ trees, their roots have destroyed property walls, but we just work around them, we do not clear cut:-)

  • I never realized you could start a fire with a water bottle! Also, that water lens was almost like a weak death ray! Pretty cool stuff!

  • Oil is very usefull, we must stop to burn it, and save as much as we can,in the futur we ll need it.

  • Very neat! You say it only works with the sun directly overhead...what if you put a mirror on top so that sunrays at an angle were directed straight down towards the parabolic water pool?

  • Oh and the tinder bundle I used was palm tree fiber shaped like a bird's nest

  • I actually have not had success with using a magnifying glass to start a fire making a coal is easy blowing it into fire is harder than it looks anyone want to give pointers?

What I used: 4 and 1/2 inch (11.25 centimeters according to my calculator) wide magnifying glass on bamboo (what I think is bamboo there is a patch growing near my house and is quite hardy)

  • The greatest !

  • The lens stretched out more than it thickened and so increased the Fl

  • 9:15 It's the government.

  • Thanks Dan, I found this video to be fascinating. Loved it!

  • @Shaunt1 Way up north the way this can be used is freeze the water , in fact do that twice and make a very powerful lens by puting the flat sides face to face . never did that but it should work wet 'em and stick 'em . I did learn bottles in my SUV full of H20 make smoke ! dont toss those bottles out the can and do start fires on the side of the road . The people that watch this kind of stuff don't litter !

  • @craigwg I think you are the reason Dan made this video.

I'm not sure if you were trolling or not but your comment sure seems like you are trying. By the way, Dan's channel is about doing GREEN projects not survival or bushcraft. I thought I should point that out to you.

  • Sweet. Next time I am stranded in the forrest I am DEFINITLEY building one of these. All I need is 20 pounds of lumber, a hammer, 4 inch screws and some wood glue and clamps. Construct the scaffold like above, then, using an air compressor and staple gun, apply a 5'x5' sheet of plastic. Next use the hose to spray 3 gallons of water on top. You'll have a blazing (luke warm) ray of light that can warm marshmallows. Sure to see you through survival in the dense Floridian outback.
