There is no real making sense of the movie. There was so much written material they couldn't fit it all in the film. But they tried and that's why it's so choppy, trying to fit all those ideas into two hours. One has to read the novelization to get the real idea of what the movie means. Unfortunate but true. I know why there was a trapped watermelon in the movie. I read the book. But I ain't saying.

Hence, "The trailer is lame because it's mostly taken from the end credits where you see most of the cast of the movie and it doesn't really give you any clear image of what the movie is about. Which is what trailers are usually for."

There are few scenes from the movie itself that have been taken from the 1) Beginning with Buckaroo crossing to the 8th dimension. 2) The middle with the inside of the goodguy alien ship 3) The end at the yoyodyne factory with the evil alien spaceship and Buckaroo talking to the communications dudes. Most of the trailer is taken from the end credits where the whole cast joins Buckaroo and walks at the camera. Besides, in plain english your message could be considered gibberish.

Actually there are scenes in this trailer not scene in the movie.

That's pretty lame trailer considering the most of the clips in the trailer consist of the End credits scene.

This is a great drinking movie game!
Watch it with your friends and every time someone says "Buckaroo" take a drink.
If someone says "Buckaroo Banzai" you have to down the whole thing.
They say it so much you'll be plastered half-way through it!

"Which was yes? To destroy Russia, or #2?" lol

It's from the film. It's played over the end credits, and carries a reprise of the main theme.
Geez, no wonder I couldn't make any sense of what the movie was about before it came out. Bizarre trailer, but it was fun to watch again. By the way, the book is a great read, and fills in many story gaps left open in the film.
