Music of Ireland
Part O3 : From Dublin to Dingle

Ulead for the movie editing, as usual
Song : Raglan Road

LYRICS :

On Raglan Road on an autumn day I saw her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue;
I saw the danger, yet I passed along the enchanted way,
And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day.

On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge
Of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion's pledge,
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay -
Oh I loved too much and by such by such is happiness thrown away.

I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret sign that's known
To the artists who have known the true gods of sound and stone
And word and tint without stint for I gave her poems to say.
With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May

On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had loved not as I should a creature made of clay -
When the angel woos the clay he'd lose his wings at the dawn of day.

  • Hi everybody and Happy New Year !!

Sorry for the silence but I left home some months ago to make a world trip and I just return.

(Feb 09, exactly nine months from the day I left Dun Laoghaire for "cette obscure clarté qui tombe des étoiles")

Thanx for all your posts, messages, video responses.. I promise to read everything.. it may take time :)

  • NO ONE sings this song like Mr. Luke Kelly.

  • While this is a perfectly nice version of the song, it doesn't convey the grief and heartbreak of unrequited love in the way that Luke Kelly's version does. Luke meant every single word he sang and his voice went straight for the heart.

  • I was 19 then.................

  • Love this version. My favourate song. Words are really powerful.I think most of us have had an experience in our lives to match the one in this song.

  • My dark haired A..t.a ran away. Kinvarra Lass.

  • its a great song, and a great story. I know all to well.

  • Beautiful rendition of a truly magnificent piece of art.

  • Absolutely charming.

    Please advise - composer? Singer?

Ignore comparisons with other performers. Much as I admire Mr Kelly. This performer takes the music to heart and shares it beautifully.
