Audio test of the Zoom H4N digital recorder.
Location: Cramond-Scotland
Cloudy day, quite breezy at times..all settings off apart from lo-cut, mic volume about 70, supplied windshield on.
Recorded at 24/48 wav
You can hear changes in the stereo field because I held the recorder in my hand and walked around, thought it would give a better idea of the range it can pick up.
Original recording sounds a lot better obviously but gives you an idea of what a great bit of kit this is :)

  • this is great! thanks!!! just bought one online. (new off ebay for $268) can't wait to get some found sounds with it.

  • @flux302 you wont regret it...this video was posted over a year ago and I'm still amazed at the audio this recorder captures still...one thing I have noticed with it is that it is incredible at picking up conversations between people quite a distance away!!! I've recorded some really strange conversations by accident with it!! lol.

  • Awesome, thanks for sharing!

Even compressed, the sound gives a good stereo image.

I've ordered mine and I'm looking forward to do some field recording too :-)

  • good for you! Seriously you will not regret getting this...it is just awesome! Have fun :)

  • Superb.

  • I sitll cant decide on this or a shotgun mike for the same price like a rode ngt2 !!! God its soo hard to decide

  • @flux302 how were you able to remove the hissess and all the background noise? i dont know how to control them with the filters

  • great test i might get this for xmas lol

  • @prammaven I was eyeing up the H2 to begin with but the improvements in design on the H4N made me splash that extra money. H4N is awesome but the H2 is a good model too...not to be sniffed at, all depends what you are using it for. Like your work by the way :)

  • The picture looks like dried lava, lol.

  • sounds like a good bit of kit you should have paired some video with it but at least you tested it where it is designed to be used and not in a studio or your bedroom

  • Hey man, love the recordings, they're beautiful! I want to get a portable recorder, this looks like a good one. In terms of noise floor, what are the mics and preamps like? What's the quietest thing you can get away with recording? Also, have you tried using it with other mics, and if so, how did the battery last? Thanks man, again, love your work!
