My new 24" monitor, with major ghosting issues

"Dell has received feedback from some customers regarding our new 2407WFP-HC monitors. The majority of this feedback has been positive but some customers have made inquiries regarding a ghosting trail behind a moving image. This effect is known as "overdrive ghosting" and, while not typically experienced with general monitor use, it may be seen from time to time when viewing patterns on a lower greyscale background.

This "overdrive ghosting" effect is tied to the overdrive feature of the LCD panel. The overdrive feature helps to deliver impressive picture details and quality across a wide multitude of usage models by improving the grey-to-grey response time. However, when the overdrive feature is coupled with a faster monitor response time, the potential for overdrive ghosting can occur in some viewing patterns."

  • Song is from a German (modern) medieval music group Estampie and it's called Non Sofre Santa Maria. It's from Cantigas de Santa MAria, 13. th century song book written by Alfonso X the Wise, king of Castile and León (Spain).

  • This ghosting is seen only in certain situations, and it's most obvious when very bright surface is moving across moderately dark one - hence the use of Notepad window in front of dark desktop.

It's true that it is hard to see in most conditions, but I play a lot of flight simulations, and the colour of dark sea brings out this defect very clearly.

I got used to it since then, but I'm still a bit angry for paying extra 20 EUR for ghosting check at shop.

  • hi

Did you contact the technical support?

    what did they tell you?

  • I bought the monitor from the reseller, not from Dell in Slovenia, since they didn't have the 24" models on stock and they cost more than 900 EUR here. Reseller says that I can get an exchange (I also have a dead pixel, and my monitor had zero dead pixel warranty). But he can't guarantee that the replacement will be any better.

  • . And this is the help I got on the Dell forum:

    "Bwaze,

I can only speak for USA policies. My advice is to get another exchange and see if the replacement is better. I doubt it will be but it is your call."

  • So, it seems that the whole series 2407WFP-HC is affected. I don't know if I can get a refund, and if this refund will include postage costs -- I guess not, so I lost 60 EUR already. And if I try a replacement and then decide I can't live with this ghosting, then I'm 90 EUR down, and no nearer to a new monitor.

  • not ghosting. ghosting is a static image usually set to the right of items such as text. SOOOOO many people think that ghosting is just a really low response time.

  • wow the music is driving me nuts

  • Its not that bad. Remember, these are IPS panels as well and all IPS panels except recent ones suffer from some ghosting. I've used the 2407WFP and really the ghosting is not that bad.

  • well, i guess in 2007 it was very common. but if any monitor ghosts today in 2010, it should be illegal for the manufacturer to ship. i never want to encounter a ghosting monitor :S they have enough money to insure quality these days so it's a MUST.

  • Whats its response time?

  • ah? i dont get? what is ghosting? and how will i know if it's ghosting? tnx

  • Long live CRT monitors.

  • sounds like a song from suikoden on the PSX ^_^
