More rough cuts that will be incorporated into an upcoming video: The Unauthorized Biography of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad.

This is another set of rough shots showing the process of ballasting the tracks built on the Carson City side of Tunnel 2 in American Flat and above Silver City.

We see a loader putting ballast in the hopper cars, then the Virginia and Truckee Railroad D-1 diesel pushes the hoppers through tunnel 2, around the corner toward Haward Siding, and drops a load of ballast.

For more information about the upcoming video, see trainarts.com after December 2009.

  • To be clear, I don't work for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad.

They have a D-1 GE diesel switcher, it was used for years when #29, the steam locomotive, was down. That's what was used for ballast contracting. Tom Gray was going to use the steam locomotive for one ballast run just to get a photo, but he decided against it because of all the dust involved.

The #8 Feather River Shortline locomotive was fixed and returned, it now sits in Gold Hill on a spur.

  • Hey was was the power for that run. i didn't see any steam, but i didn't think you had any deisels either....?

    Thanks

  • After I made that comment, I noticed a message at the top of the screen that Youtube was still processing the video, and that quality might improve when processing was done. Thankfully, it did. Next I will upload a video in HD, which Youtube is currently experimenting with. Usually when I export HD files the audio and video are separate, I have to figure out a format where they are together.

  • I see now my last two uploaded videos did not fit the new widescreen display from YouTube, sorry for the black bars on the sides and top. I have not uploaded for a long time and my video compression did not lead to the best quality either. The original HD/Blu-Ray looks crisp, but at least you get the idea here on YouTube.
