On January 15, 2008, Washoe County School District Board approves a Capital Spending Allocation that favors building new schools at 62% ($110 million) of the new money borrowed, and older schools only getting 26% ($38 million). The allocation adds $175 million to Washoe County School District's $475 million debt, plus interest. This action contradicts a Washoe County School District direct mail campaign to each household in 2007 that showed a need for capital spending of 34% for new schools, and 52% for older schools. The failure to get a tax increase at the 07 Legislature led to the creation of SB154.
Washoe County School District is currently working with the SB154 Construction and Revitalization Committee to write a tax increase for the 2008 General Election ballot in November. The district wants to borrow $600 million for new schools, repairs to older schools, and technology upgrades. When added to the current debt of $475 million, the total debt for Washoe County School District will exceed $1.1 Billion.
