My buddy next door introduced me to Rodriguez. Months later I played this song on the guitar for him and other friends in his back yard as they all chomped on over barbecued ribs, drank beer and baked in the sun. He said it was the most he had felt at home in England since he left South Africa ten years go. And I'm almost certain a tear of joy ran down his face. I guess I'm just trying to say that I understand music is a very powerful thing indeed.

definitely just you ;)
Actually it's funny how different people hear so many different artists and influences in Rodriguez. I hear a bit of Tom Waits and Dylan with a subtle pinch of Michael Stipe, oddly enough.

That's true and my comment should not be seen as dissing Rodriguez, not at all. It was just a reaction to the 'without a doubt the best folk musician in history'-statement. I would like to see where he would've been if he kept recording. But this is the way history turned out. Anyway, glad I got to know Rodriguez.

I agree, Dylan is a genius. But that's not to say this guy wasn't a genius in his own right. He's very talented. I think he had 3 things working against him. 1-he sounded too much like Dylan. 2-he has a Hispanic name and look, and back then these weren't very marketable traits. And 3- I think this brand of folk rock that catapulted Dylan to fame was already pretty much dead by 1971. Hell Dylan had already "gone electric" a full 6 years before then. The stars just weren't aligned for Sixto.
