Johann Sebastian Bach - Cantata IV "Christ lag in Todesbanden"
0:01 Symphonia
1:07 vs 1 (Chorale fantasia)
5:20 Unison congregational chorale, reharmonized by Mark Husey

Original German text:
Christ lag in Todesbanden für unsre Sünd gegeben, Er ist wieder erstanden und hat uns bracht das Leben; Des wir sollen fröhlich sein, Gott loben und ihm dankbar sein und singen halleluja. Halleluja!

English translation:
Christ lay in death's bonds given over for our sins, He has risen again and brought us life; therefore we should be joyful, praise God and be thankful to Him and sing Hallelujah. Hallelujah!

Congregational chorale - free harmonization by Mark Husey

1) Christ Jesus lay in deaths strong bands for our offenses given;
But now at Gods right hand He stands and brings us life from Heaven.
Wherefore let us joyful be and sing to God right thankfully
Loud songs of Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

2) Our Savior Jesus, Gods own Son here in our stead descended;
the knot of sin has been undone, the claim of death is ended.
Christ has crushed the powr of hell; now there is naught but deaths gray shell its sting is lost forever. Hallelujah!

3) Here the true paschal Lamb we see, Whom God so freely gave us;
He died on the accursed tree— So strong His love!—to save us.
See, His blood doth mark our door, Faith points to it, death passes o'er,
And Satan cannot harm us. Hallelujah!

  • wow tolle Kirche, wo ist denn das??

  • @Hopelessdream1 St. Peter's Catholic Church in Columbia, South Carolina USA. Thank you!

  • Great job on the first two parts. I would've done the original chorale. If you're gonna do unison, just let the cantor do it.

  • @albermarle52 - the chorale, in English sung by the congregation, is how we offered this Cantata soundbite for a liturgy instead of in a concert setting: in a concert setting, the choral would have been the setting by Bach, sung in German. I'm really proud that our congregation sang it so well.
