Years ago he used a TC sustainer, but that's the only compressor I've ever seen him use and probably not in 15 years. For a long time he'd use a Boss delay (DD2 I think) set to maybe 400 ms with a little feedback to lengthen his sustain and make the space of his sound bigger. Then he'd use a Digitech PDS8000 for looping/pitch shifting stuff. That's what he created his whacky looping WTF? bits with (EH 16 second DD before that). His time feel and sense of space are phenomenal.
@justinrennell Can't be the Campilongo, because the date of the recording is before the release of that guitar. Also the bridge's sides are not sawed off.
He used to use a lot of compression in his signal. He's really gotten away from that--he still uses effects (generally runs a pair of Deluxe Reverbs with a Lexicon MPX100, along with a Keeley Flexi 4x2 Overdrive, a Line 6 DL4 for looping, and whatever goofy sound he chooses to throw in the mix for good measure), but as you can see here, most of his playing is clean. He's so damn good that he doesn't need anything else.
Beautiful stuff. Thanks for the post!
Love the way Bill picks way down by the bridge, to way up over the neck pickup, depending on the tone he wants for each phrase!
A true master and national treasure.
