Amazing. I just read, too, the book called "The Berlin Box Club" about a 13 year old Jewish boy who goes from being a kid to a strong young man. Really good even though it's fiction based on real events.
Is it just me or was that like, the best book ever? My teacher made us all read a Holocaust book for an Anne Frank Unit and I read that and I couldn't put it down!
Schmeling was also a good guy. He went back to Nazi Germany and although Hitler and the Nazi propagandists wanted to use Schmeling as their Aryan race poster boy, Schmeling would have nothing of it. He also became close friends with Loius, even after Louis won the rematch in a one round knock out. Even more interesting is that Schmeling died a very rich man. He ended up acquiring distribution rights for Coca Cola in Germany. Max was a good guy. There is even a stadium in Berlin named after him
I read that prior to the first fight Schmeling studied fight films of Loius for weeks trying to figure out what Louis' weakness was - if any. Schmeling said also that he was scared of Loius and expected to get creamed. However, then he noticed that the one weakness Louis had was that he dropped his left arm after his jab and did not protect himself. Schmeling waited many rounds until he felt that Louis was least suspecting and tired before throwing the punch. These are the punches you see.
@tiyow funny, that book was the only reason i looked this up. that was a really good book.
