New H1N1 Flu Vaccine Being Shipped Early

The flu is the new goldmine for drug companies, this is a dangerous hyped scam. It may be summer, but the pharmaceutical companies are ready for flu season and they said you should be, too. Sanofi Pasteur sent out its first shipment of influenza vaccines Friday. This season, they said the rules are changing and there's new information you should know.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Jahre, chief of infectious diseases at St. Luke's Hospital said this is at least a month ahead of the usual schedule.

He said this year, pharmaceutical companies are getting the flu vaccines out earlier than usual and it's not too early to get yours.

Jahre says flu shots are made by looking very closely at certain trends.

He says that one of the ways is to see what's circulating particularly in Asia because often times what starts in Asia comes here eventually. The second way is to look at the strains from the year before.

This year the Center for Disease Control recommends even more people get the flu shot.

Dr. Jahre says that they are now recommending that the seasonal influenza vaccine be given to anyone over the age of six months.

Some other big changes are what's in the vaccine. The swine flu vaccine or the H1N1 component is in the seasonal vaccine. So Jahre says that for most people a single shot would do the job.

Jahre says the shelf life of the flu shot is the same as usual and will protect you for just as long.

Kids under the age of eight who are getting the flu shot for the first time are advised by the CDC to get the swine flu shot separate from the flu shot. This year there's also a more concentrated dose of the flu shot available for people over the age of 65.
