It was a nightmare that shocked not only New York, but all of America. The public outcry about the Willowbrook State School for people with developmental disabilities resulted from Geraldo Rivera's expose after he had entered Willowbrook with a film crew in 1972, using a stolen key.

@MultiTrollHunter you sound exactly like Hitler, who believed all the "worthless" and "imperfect" specimens of the human race should be erased. Who, exactly, would decide who are the "burdens" who contribute nothing to society? You? Some committee? There are a lot of sane, intelligent people who are lazy, useless burdens on society, too, you know. Should they go, too? As soon as we, as a race, begin treating our own kind with that sort of judgmental "I'm better than you" attitude, all is lost.

@MultiTrollHunter Tell the parents of a disabled child that their child has no use. I think you will get a different answer. I think the answer to overpopulation is to put down people with your attitude. It would make the world a much more pleasant place.

To anyone who has any doubts, let it be known (do your research): Willowbrook is not the exception, it is the rule. This is type of treatment of both legitimately ill and falsely diagnosed victims is more commonplace now than ever. All evidence shows that these places were built for the sole purposes of running experiments on people society wouldn't miss much. Geraldo would never dare accuse the US of maltreating humans in 2011. Thats why he's still on TV. They 'straightened him out'

@janiegirl24 No more Willowbrook.... you honestly think they just stop doing this sort of thing? Millions of people locked in these types of institutions up into the 70's, and now they dont exist anymore? The reason there is no Willowbrook 2011 is simply because they arent out in the open anymore,which means the victims will be treated worse. It disgust me everyday that no one ever bands together after seeing the obvious proof of what the US governments not only allow,but promote!
