Bikaner Fort is popularly referred to as the Junagarh Fort. It was built by Raja Rai Singh who was one of Mughal emperor Akbar's trusted generals. There are as many as 37 citadels which protects the fort. This is one fort in Rajasthan which has never been annexed or conquered. There was one dubious instance though when Prince Kamaran laid seize to the fort, but could not keep it on hold for even 24 hours.
The fort's 37 bastions are nicely complimented with a number of palaces, towers, pavilions and temples. There is the exquisitely beautiful Chandra Mahal which is adorned with mirrors and art works. Other palaces worth seeing are the Phool Mahal, the Karan Mahal and the majestic Anup Mahal which used to serve as the assembly hall of the erstwhile rulers.
Inside the fort there is a museum, which has an astonishing collection of ancient manuscripts, gems and jewellery, exquisite carpets, treaties, arms and royal weaponry.
The Unassailable
One of the most trusted and the most able generals of Akbar, who was Raja Rai Singh, built the Junagarh Fort, Bikaner. This fort has very high walls. There are 37 bastions that guard the fort and there are only two gates that give access inside the fort. The main gate is the Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate, which is the main entrance. Inside the fort there are marvelous palaces, temples and pavilions that are built in red sandstone. All in all there are 37 palaces inside the fort. The intricate and beautifully carved windows, balconies, towers and kiosks add to the beauty of the fort. However, the beautiful carvings, mirrors, paintings, and carved marble panels are a real toast for the eyes of the visitors. Amongst the most famous palaces that are present inside the fort the Moon palace and the Flower palace are adorned with glasses and mirrors. Apart from this there are other Mahals also which have a different legend of their own. The multi-storeyed Anup Mahal was one amongst them, which was used by the rulers as their governance chambers.
Junagarh Fort, Bikaner and the various palaces were built in between the period of 1588-1893 AD by Raja Rai Singh, but this palace still stands straight till date. There has been almost no damage to the walls of the fort. This speaks of the strength and the strong past of this fort.
