Clip of a rare TV interview with crime-fiction writer James Ellroy. Here the author talks to Miranda Sawyer about his fascination with crime and with 1950s Los Angeles - a world where celebrity, crime and politics converge. He also talks about the paintings of Ed Ruscha, which capture the menace and promise of LA, currently the subject of a major show at the Hayward Gallery in London. The interview was featured on BBC 2's The Culture Show aired on 12th November 2009.

  • This is a great interview. I love James Ellroy - My Dark Places is my favourite. I think there's real chemistry between Ellroy and Sawyer in this interview. Love it!

  • Yes, he's an enaging interviewee - no doubt about that. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • I've not actually read ANY of his work - I've watched L.A Confidential - but having heard of this man, I decided to check him out on YouTube. He really is a terrificly interesting, watchable man. I could listen to him all day. Theres a video of him on a TV chat show on here - It's hilarious !! check it out.

  • It's worth reading some his novels. Black Daliah for example is a great read. He manages to get inside the dark heart of humanity like no one else. And the story lines are complex but very engaging. I will check the TV show feature you recommended - do you have a link address?

  • James Ellroy dosent mean a tjhing, the only thing that matters, are His Books

  • This is a fantastic interview. She clearly understands the man and his work and asks some genuinely personal questions. I get the impression that he respects her for that.

  • Kudos to the interviewer. She knew her shit and it showed!

  • It's almost like her pants are being magically drawn toward him.

  • @GovernmentGuy Suggestion: Start with the brilliant trilogy composed of: The Big Nowhere, LA confidential, White Jazz.

  • Wonder if he fucked her afterwards?

  • If you are interested, Ruscha’s “Real Estate Opportunities” from 1970 is up for auction on eBay.

  • "and quite a lot of the poeple end up dead?" duh isn't that what he just said in a far more eloquent manner, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt she's starstruck bless her.

  • Who else would like to make out with the interviewer?

  • What kind of tasteless prick gave bad reviews for the Cold Six Thousand??

  • Fantastic interview; intelligent questions - I just wish it were longer. I didn't know he had a breakdown as recent as that. I did notice how skinny he looked.
