NEW YORK, USA, 1 August 2006 -- Thirty-five years after George Harrison's 'Concert for Bangladesh' raised over $15 million for UNICEF, the late Beatle has been inducted into the Madison Square Garden 'Walk of Fame'.

The concert was the first of its kind and is recognized as the inspiration behind more recent humanitarian fundraising ventures like 'Band Aid' and 'Live Aid'.

Last autumn, Olivia Harrison, who received the plaque today, opened a fund in her late husband's name with an initial donation of $1 million. The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF specifically targets UNICEF programs in Bangladesh but also provides lifesaving assistance to children suffering from civil conflict, natural disasters and poverty elsewhere.

  • i don't think you guys should argue over this. the fact is, ravi shankar was a friend of george, and he approached george harrison to do a small scale fund raising concert. and george harrison, being an awesome person, arranged the concert in less than 3 weeks. stop saying 'oh it's cuz of ravi shankar' or 'oh it's cuz of george harrison',this isn't something we should fight about, yes, ravi did come up with the idea, but if you ask me, without george, this wouldn't happen.

    a proud bangladeshi

  • good for him! but i think he deserves more than a little plaque

  • why do people never honor those who deserve it until they're dead. it would be nice to show these people they were apreciated

  • No words are enough for George, absolutely wonderful human being.

  • Thirty five years after the concert, five years after his death, George Harrison is STILL doing more for charity and love than celebrities and musicians half his age.

My God, the world needs him back.

And as FUBAR'd as this world is today, I can't even imagine what we would have been had we not had him.

  • So he started this!!! cool! love the them song, for that concert...awesome!

  • @jamie2628 Bangladesh is not Pakistan. The country of Bangladesh is East Bengal, on the eastern side of India. Bangladesh separated from Pakistan in 1971, as a result of a civil war with many casualites. That's when George Harrison hosted this concert to raise funds and awareness and support for Bangladesh. Thanks !!

  • jamie2628-I believe Bangladesh is Pakistan now. Great concert great gift to humanity. George was a great guy. What strong emotions he had when he sang about his friend who's people needed help. God bless him.

  • George was the best.

  • Thanks, George, you were such a good musician and man...
