  • hi, I have a cake that I want to use fondant shapes, but I want to make the fondant ahead of time. So, how long will the fondant last if I just put it in the fridge??? If it is put in the freezer how long does it take to defrost? One more question, can you use icing from the store to cover a cake then put Fondant shapes on it?? Thank you for any help

  • Never put fondant in the fridge. Its not cold enough, moisture will collect on fondant and make it melt and ruin your work. Make your fondant shapes a couple of days in advance, put them in a freezer bag, and just leave them sitting a table. They will dry and become stiff, but that will make them easier to work with. After frozen, you can nuke fondant in the microwave about 10 seconds at a time until soft. Store bought icing works just fine. Message me if you have more questions :)

  • Hi just watched your video, you already answered alot of my questions by reading all the comments. But I still have a few, I'm during two first I'm making my first fondant ( I usally buy) and my first topsy turvy cake. How much fondant did that one batch you made cover? And I've been reading about cracking of fondant. How does that happen?

  • @hammerthwer,

One batch of fondate will cover about 2-3 cakes for me with some left over for decoration. You can always make extra, wrap it tightly in cling wrap, and freeze it. I suggest making 2 batches and freezing the extra. To prevent cracking, you want to make sure the fondant isn't dry. If you kneed too much powder sugar into the dough, it will get dry and crack. Also, don't over work the dough or roll it too thin.

I hope that answers your questions. If not, just let me know :)

  • lol... Came here for the video, got distracted by the music. That was the first concerto i ever performed with a full symphony. Thanks for the video *and* the music!

  • @MasterCjay,

Thanks for the comment! Yea, this song holds a special place in my heart as well. I actually played viola in an orchestra and this piece was one of my favorite songs to play! It was so fun :)

  • I'm just now learning to do all this and I brought Marshmallow fondant home to practice with. Do I stick it in the fridge when im not using it? Or do I just leave it out of the fridge? It's strictly for practicing right now. Im gonna make a fresh batch when I attempt another cake. Lol
