I've always wondered what that two hour artillery barrage may have sounded like, it the best I could put together for myself, I just thought I'd post it, and share it with anyone else who may be interested.
This computation of sounds that I have put together is my attempt to recreate a small portion of the first 30 minutes, when the Union Batteries were returning fire.
I've obtained numerous digital recordings of 3 inch Confederate type cannon being fired, adjusted the volume placing the listener centered in a two mile line of cannon. Each Confederate Battery could fire one round every 30 to 45 seconds. Using computer software I've entered 165 cannon, each firing once every 30-45 seconds.
I've also included the canister shot exploding 45-60 seconds after each cannon shot, I've applied this to ½ of the cannons fired, due to the acoustic shadows, I figured the ½ would not have been heard on that day from that position.
I've also added 100 Union heavier cannon, returning fire, each cannon also firing once every 30-45 seconds. The union cannon only returned fire for the first 30 minutes.
It was at one o'clock, July 3rd, 1863, that two Confederate signal guns were fired, and at once there opened such an artillery combat as the armies had never before seen. This was the largest artillery barrage ever fired until World War one.
It was estimated that between 160 and 175 confederate cannon were firing at will, for two hours at the Union Lines.

  • How come NOBODY has the scene of the atrillery prior to Pickett's Charge?

  • @ThePoerio I thought of that after I put the clip together, in hindsight, I should have spliced in the video from the movie Gettysburg, that was a fantastic recreation, if I have the time Ill remake this with that inserted.

  • No, Im not even aware of the game.

  • @mag30th Have been to Gettysburgh once with my father back in '77. One cannot go there without taking away a lasting impression. When this initial barrage took place was the return fire only hitting the Confederate batteries or were the infantry out from cover yet at that point? Just wonder what the troop disposition was on the Confederate side during the 2 hour barrage, considering especially the fact the Union batteries only returned fire for the first 1/2 hour. Why only 1/2 hour return fire?
