TWO PEOPLE RESCUED AFTER SPENDING A COLD NIGHT ON A CLIFF - May 17, 2009 Drenched mother and son survive being stranded overnight in B.C.'s Kootenay region. Two people, a female in her early 30s and a 9 year old boy are being treated in Kootenay Lake hospital after spending a cold night on a rock cliff above the waters on the north side of the Kootenay River.
At 7:09am this morning workers from the nearby City Of Nelson Grohman Narrows Sewage Treatment Plant, just west of Nelson BC, heard faint cries for help across the river. They immediately notified police who responded to the plant and saw two people 20 feet up a rock cliff over the Kootenay River. Unable to reach them because there is no access to the area, they called the Nelson Fire Rescue Services who dispatched a rescue boat from Nelson Search and Rescue who were able to pluck the two from the cliff by boat. They were taken to hospital and are recovering from Hypothermia.
The two were canoeing yesterday afternoon when the boat flipped and they were tossed into the river and were unable to retrieve their canoe and swam to the nearest shore.
"No missing reports were filed" said the Nelson City Police. "The situation could have ended much worse if the city workers didn't hear their cry for help," said one witness.
