The patient's surgical position achieves three equally important goals: maximum surgical exposure for the surgical team, optimal airway access and monitoring for the anesthesia provider, and physiological safety for the patient. As the patient's advocate, the perioperative nurse has a primary responsibility for patient safety in the perioperative environment. The desired outcome of the surgical position is a patient whose skin integrity is maintained and postoperatively has no signs and symptoms of injury related to the intraoperative positioning.
