The patient's surgical position achieves three equally important goals: maximum surgical exposure for the surgical team, optimal airway access and monitoring for the anesthesia provider, and physiological safety for the patient. As the patient's advocate, the perioperative nurse has a primary responsibility for patient safety in the perioperative environment. The desired outcome of the surgical position is a patient whose skin integrity is maintained and postoperatively has no signs and symptoms of injury related to the intraoperative positioning. This activity demonstrates proper positioning techniques, the benefits of each position, and contraindications.
