Replacing Kirk Whalum as touring saxophonist for Luther Vandross, Houston Texas' Kyle Turner, bandmates Kerry Wilkins, TJ Jenkins, & Allen Mosely made way to Austin to launch The KYLE TURNER BAND, later named KYLE TURNER & STANDING ROOM ONLY.
Local r&b singer Rayvon Foster recommended _e check the band out when the drum position came available.
Two songs into the audition the band took a moment to discuss and the rest is now local Austin jazz/blues history.
KT & SRO became well known for their blend of high energy fusion; r&b pop, rock and jazz influenced instrumentals, causing nightly sidewalk congestion outside the small restaurant.
Located on Austin's Historic 6th street near the Trinity intersection, Kyle Turner & Standing Room Only held residency in Austin's last African-American owned jazz-restaurant, CATFISH STATION, where UT student / aspiring actor Matthew McConaghey worked as a waiter before discovering his destiny.
The band went on to open for Natalie Cole, Najee, Kirk Whalum, Grover Washington Jr., Kim Waters, Paul Jackson Jr, Bobby Lyle, Charles Neville, Peabo Bryson, Marion Meadows, Spyro Gyra, Confunkshun, & many more contemporary jazz r&b artists.
