King has served as the lead singer for a number of obscure power/prog metal bands over the last 3 decades, most notably Balance of Power, Avian, and the most overlooked band in the world Pyramaze. Though a low tenor, King can tend to thin out in the upper reaches and sound rather falsettish, yet has a very baritone like low register. In fact, sometimes he seems more comfortable in the lower extremities than the high. He has also developed some interesting nonmodal technique, including the always pleasing deathgrowl technique!

0:00 - A spellbinding passage bottoming at G2 from "Legend"
0:35 - Working his way down to a strong G2 in "Ashes and Madness"
0:46 - He first sings down to A2, then speaks to F♯2 in "The Bone Carver"
1:05 - Spoken section bottoming at F2 from "Blood Red Skies"
1:28 - A pair of solid E2s from "Thundersoul" by Avian
1:39 - A creepy passage from "House of Cain" bottoming at E2
2:00 - Another passage from "Blood Red Skies" this ending on E♭2
2:12 - A strange section from "Time and Space Part II" featuring several solid E♭2s amidst some whispering
2:42 - Sing-speaking some solid D2s in "The Lost and Forsaken"
2:59 - Several very strong B1s with fry F1s from "Killer or the Cure"
3:24 - Guttural nonmodal B1s in "Thundersoul"
3:30 - Speaking in vocal fry down to G♯1 in "Ashes and Madness"
3:51 - An impressive deathgrowl bottoming at C1(!) from "The Lost and Forsaken"
4:07 - Now onto the highs: A beautiful familiar passage topping at B♭4 from "Legend"
4:58 - Singing up to a powerful B4 in "Time and Space Part II"
5:15 - Seamless B4s in the chorus of "Seven Days to Nevermore"
5:40 - A heartfelt passage trilling up to a very clean B4 in "The Darker Side"
5:53 - Singing down from C5 in "Mighty Abyss"
6:13 - Sharp C5s from "Seven Days to Nevermore"
6:26 - A powerful C5 from "The Bone Carver"
6:36 - Several airy C♯5s from "Stranger Days (To Come)"
7:04 - Ethereal C♯5s from two verses in "The Birth"
7:39 - Some shrill singing up to D5 from "The Depths of Time"
7:54 - More ethereal singing topping at D5 from the cluttered ending of "The Birth"
8:29 - Lots of D5s, ending with an E♭5 from "Hard Life"
9:07 - Working up to a clean E♭5 in "When Heaven Calls Your Name"
9:23 - A stronger, sustained E♭5 from "Book of Secrets"
9:39 - An astonishingly powerful E5 from the live version of "What Lies Beyond" by Pyramaze
9:55 - Singing up to strained E5s from a live cover of "Eyes of a Stranger" with King's band Krucible
10:05 - Surprisingly seemless singing to F5 from "Prisoner of Pride"
10:15 - A short piercing falsetto F5 falling to a full D5 in "Blinding Force"
10:21 - Singing in full up to E♭5, then switching to falsetto for a shrill F5 in "Ancient Words Within"
10:40 - A strong, sustained falsetto G5 from "Legend"
10:48 - The very impressive ending of "Eyes of Stranger" where Lance first hits a solid E2, then screams an F5, speaks a D2, and lets out an F♯5 which rises to G5!
11:18 - An F♯5 and G♯5 layered in "Thundersoul"
11:24 - This one's pretty tough to hear, but King hits a couple of F5s along with the guitar, then sustains a G♯5 in "Never Fade from Me"
11:40 - A well-sustained passage where Lance sings up to E♭5 in full voice, then gradually switches to falsetto for an F5 which trills to a short G♯5; song is "Time and Space Part II: Unlock the Mystery"
12:09 - And finally, Lance glides up to a strong G♯5 in "Fire Dance"

Thanks as always to Thetarantinomaniac, Royalcrimsontheater and Danerage, and of course the man himself, Lance King (MEGALOUD)!

  • @zorland876; How do you measure these notes..? Nice peace of work b.t.w. ;-)

  • @MrArcovanA I use a tuner, and usually my own voice. For a lot of lows though I get second (or first) opinions from the folks I mentioned in the information.

  • Wow, that is a lot of study and thought put into this montage of my work, I'm impressed and thankful you found my voice worthy of your time in this capacity, I honestly had no idea what the notes are that I go for, I just hear them in my head and sing them, thankfully bands are not playing any higher than standard tuning ; )

I'm working on my first solo album ever and am really enjoying it, many of the songs are tuned to low B, and this has given me a rich place to play with my middle full voice

  • @MEGALOUD Wow, thanks! I'm glad you like it. I really have a hard time finding material before BoP, so actually probably a good chunk of your career is missing. In case you couldn't tell, I'm a huge Pyramaze fan.

I must say I was really surprised the high notes in What Lies Beyond and Prisoner, I mean I love falsetto, but those were some really strong full notes XD

Looking forward to the solo album, thanks for commenting!
