Penguin Bubble Fun!

Keeping over 200 playful and intelligent penguins entertained can be a challenge, but keepers at Edinburgh Zoo are experts at penguin enrichment. This week they treated the penguin colony to a shower of bubbles from the popular bubble making machine. During a snowfall our penguins will chase snowflakes and try to catch them, in much the same way as they do with the bubbles.

Edinburgh Zoo is home to the largest outdoor penguin pool in Europe and the resident penguin colony includes three varieties of penguins—Kings, Rockhoppers and Gentoos.

Rockhopper penguins are classed as endangered on the IUCN Red List following a rapid decline in the wild population, meaning this species faces a high risk of extinction. Gentoo penguins are also under pressure from climate change, over fishing, marine pollution and habitat loss.

Are the bubbles made with normal bubble solution, or something else? I'm only wondering because I don't know how safe it would be for them to ingest that. As I said, I don't know. Can someone enlighten me?

@bowiechick Thanks for your message. Our bubble solution is from the early learning centre and rated child safe. It is always diluted very weak solution and even if one of our cheeky penguins does manage to catch a bubble it will pop before anything can be digested. As an extra precaution the bubble machine is closely supervised, placed outwith the penguins direct reach and has no loose parts. I hope this answers your question. I want to be a zoo keeper! Also bubbles are prob no more dangerous to the penguins (who don't appear to be eating them anyway) than they are to your kids. They are made to be played with.
