It means the song is versatile, I actually really like this version. Not being a religious person, I find this song quite hard to sing but she's giving it passion and that's all it's about.

Stop moaning about it not being "gospel".

People have been doing "secular" versions of it since Big Mama Thornton in the 50's, you ought to be used to it by now.

My favourite version is by Ramsey Lewis, and he did it as an uptempo instrumental for dancing to, so make of that what you will.
