EXCLUSIVE UPDATE:
UNIFYING AUSTRALIAN-OROMO LEADERSHIP
A REPORT FROM AOCAV, MELBOURNE.

More than 50 Oromo Community group leaders assembled for an inaugural Oromo Community consultation day, which took place on Sunday 30th October in Melbourne, Australia. Organized by the management committee of Australian Oromo community Association in Victoria (AOCAV), groups from every religious, ethnic, political, social, gender and age groups took part in a round-table discussion to explore ways to better engage with Oromo-community affairs in Melbourne.

Positive attitudes and vibes overflowed as each community leader introduced themselves, the purpose for establishing their group and also, what event and activities they will be involved in for the next 12 months. Together with the AOCAV management committee, the different branches of leaders developed a community calendar to enable better networking and accessible communication between all the different Oromo community branches. During the break, group leaders interacted informally to to get to know one another more personally and finally, community leaders re-convened to organize the 2012 Federation Square Festival as well as hearing feedback from AOCAV developments with the Australian government.

Former AOCAV President, Aliye Geleto shared valuable insight to eager listeners, educating the entire community leaders, including the management committee regarding the importance and practical application of developing further relationships with members in Australian government. The new AOCAV President, Toltu Tufa, focused on the importance of maintaining positive political relationships within Australian-Oromo communities and detailed the plan to broaden internal community communication.

Never before have so many Oromo influential men, women and youth leaders have gathered in one place with agreed actions to move forward as a community. This was a concise and precisely timed meeting which renewed the resolve of the collective community, celebrated the human, political, social and economic direction of Australian-Oromos and most importantly, this meeting recognized the tireless efforts of local community champions who reflect like precious jewels in the fabric of the Australian Oromo community.
