Automotive Robo-Tech was called to a Fiat specialty shop, who was trying to repair a Fiat Stilo which did not start in 50% of the attempts. In case the engine did start, it ran normal, according to the mechanic. The car was checked with Fiat scanner. Several codes were found, but none of them appeared to be related to the problem. The mechanic who worked on the car suggested that the CAN bus might have a problem. This appeared reasonable, because all information disappeared from the dashboard during cranking. In many vehicle systems, including some Dodge Chrysler, the electronics of the ignition key transponder system is located in the dashboard, so this could cause the engine not starting.
The Fiat dealer contacted Robo-Tech for advice. I advised to test the CAN bus signals with a diagnosis oscilloscope during cranking. The captured signals were e-mailed to me for analysis. It looked like the CAN bus signals are highly distorted. The CAN bus carries a differential signal to reduce the possibilities of errors through external interference. This differencial signal is a mirror of each other, but with polarity inverted. The CAN bus signal appeared to be distorted, but it was fine, as can be seen in the difference signal created by subtracting the CAN-L signal from the CAN-H signal.
When I arrived at the shop, more tests on the dashboard were needed to be performed. It appeared that the power of the dashboard ..... Watch the whole story right now! ..... Get it all here in this video now!

@theautomechanic I hate to use my channel for plugs, but yes, you can purchase the entire DVD set from Amazon and load it into the iPOD. I don't know how it's done, but I have folks who've done it before. Do a search from Amazon for "Stories from the Road" in the Movies and TV section. Beware, Keep an eye for the complete set. You save some money like that if you get the whole package. We have all our videos on Amazon. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

@theautomechanic Thanks for posting. Well ol Sly is still alive and kicking, but the video didn't have Sly as the main character though, maybe he was Roto-Tech in disguise. Good luck to you.

I have a video on aligning the Ford Escort ZX2 that uses VCT in place of an EGR valve. Their cam sprockets are similar. Ironically the tool for the recessed line up isn't available any more. So you have to make one. i sold the one I made last to a Youtuber for $80. FIAT Fix It Again Tony!
