Comparison between Sunshine and Galaxy using Sony Vegas's track motion.

A screenshot of Sony Vegas with this project (yes, I was working with everything you see in this screenshot).

GT (gametrailers) made a very cheap comparison between sunshine and galaxy showing nothing more than Mario's moves, and in 1 segment compared a CGI pre-rendered Sunshine Mario to the realtime game model Galaxy Mario, and that pissed me off.

If anything, this is a video to see what Vegas can really do (2 hours 17 minutes render time!). I originally planned on comparing things by their graphical field (ie: textures, models, draw distance, particles, shading, etc), but that would require video I didn't record. Plus, with 3 hours of editing and an hour and a half of recording, you can't go wrong no matter what you do :)

Anyway, I'm tired of people saying Sunshine and Galaxy look the same. Technically, artistically, and just plain old visually, they're completelly different.

Super Mario Sunshine VS Galaxy... after playing, owning, and beating 20 of Mario's games, I know Galaxy is by far better than Sunshine. Sunshine pulled off the island theme better than any other game I know. The subtle cel shading, brightness, blue tint in the water and beautiful skies makes it very convincing. But as a game, Sunshine is very cheap. 24 of the 120 stars come from 240 Blue Coins, and many of them are only visible in certain episodes of a level. I wouldn't have been able to beat the game without a guide, even though I beat Galaxy with relative ease. Galaxy's difficulty comes from the level design and it's not conditional (you don't either know how to beat it or not. Basically, Galaxy is pure skill while you just need to know what to do in Sunshine). Sunshine's introduction of FLUDD made most of the levels incredibly easy, but the minigames are kind of nice. The problem with the minigames is... they're not too fun. They can get frustrating (especially the ones around Delphino Plaza with Red Coin collecting) and, as said before, you just gotta know what to do before hand more than half the time. Also, Galaxy perfected swimming controls in a platformer (spinning to go faster and diving really helped!) and perfected the troublesome camera in the series. Galaxy is perfect in just about every way possible except in the mission layout, but the layout was a common problem with Sunshine as well (40 levels: 15 main levels with 3 main stars, 2 comet stars, and 1 hidden star each and 25 levels with only 1 star... for Sunshine, 7 levels: 7 main "quest" stars, a bonus "8" star, 2 hidden stars many of which were red coin challanges to already done minigames, and 240 blue coins).

Super Mario 64 is better than both. While the controls aren't as refined as Galaxy's, just about every level is fully memorable and nostalgic and downright perfect in design. Furthermore, 7 stars in each of the 15 levels and 15 secret hidden stars makes the game the most "complete." You have more freedom reguarding what star you want to get VS the star you promised you would get in the beginning and you always have the option to not beat the game but just goof off and do whatever you want. It doesn't feel forced, which makes it that much more fun.
