Ryan Baum, of Louisville, completed six years of service with the U.S. Marine Reserves on Friday. The last six months of his service was spent on the front lines in Afghanistan with his unit, number 325, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines. Baum reported during an interview Friday afternoon the battling was much more intense there than people here in the U.S. realize. (See related article in today's issue.)
The photos and video posted here were taken by Baum and the other soldiers in his unit. Baum said the infantry turned their phone and Ipod cameras on and put them in their front pockets during battle and when they got back to the states they edited the footage together. Baum said the video shows how fast the pace was for the soldiers to maintain, and the photos depict the tough living conditions they, and the Afghan villagers, faced. Some photos show Afghan people and children during their everyday lives. Others show the U.S. Marine Reserves in Baum's unit during battle, crossing wadis (deep trenches of water), bringing American casualties out to meed Medevac helicopters, and trying to find an hour or two to sleep on the dessert floor.
The photos also show some of the Afghan people, who Baum reported, were trained not to flee when a battle erupted around where they were working in the fields or around their huts and villages. In fact, if they fled, they were often shot. Baum said this is because if the Taliban-trained fighters found they were losing the skirmish, they would draw back and blend into the crowd.

@nela04 Throughout all of history, armies have committed attrosaties (sp). You cannot shame a whole segment of the army just because of the actions of a few of them.
