how entertaining....I work here, I have radiation checks all the time, in fact you are more likley to have a higher radiation dose, living in the mountains of switzerland that you will here, it is still well under the average for a person to deal with, some people just need education on what radiation is, it doesnt turn you green, and you would have to eat 5lbs of red dust to get sick, its sand, not radioactive dust, SAND.....blowing to new zealand, haha thats even more entertaining

The 'dust' is the tailings produced from extracting uranium from the ground. 84% of the radioactivity remains in the tailings which are sandlike hence they are placed in tailing ponds. The expansion of Olympic Dam will create such large amounts of tailings that they will also be placed above ground and covered with dirt. Radiation does occur naturally. An open pit mine will INCREASE exposure to radiation which INCREASES the risk of cancer. There is NO safe level of radiation exposure.

If only the material was false. Unfortunately our politicians and media are not taking these issues seriously enough and unless you can provide well researched material that is unbiased it does not hold to simply say the facts are not correct...or crap.

2. Photos of children shown are not referenced or are of children from Roxby.

3. Footage used is not of the mine site - much of the footage is not even near Roxby Downs/Olympic Dam. Footage of the front end loader doing excavations is of a housing development in Roxby Downs - not mining, (A student worked on this development)

4. The tailings that the author is talking about is already being treated on the surface, and has been for 20 years, without any known problems or health effects.

As a group of 13 Year 12 Media Students living in Roxby Downs (9 kms south of Olympic Dam) (some of us for 18 years), we have analysed this video. There are a number of gaps in this video, such as:

1. Roxby Downs has the highest birth rate in SA - without defects reported - the physically/mentally disabled population in Roxby is extremely low and are not necessarily born here. The author of this video has failed to include this or give any credible statistics to back up claims.

YES it is going to be a large mine and YES it will increase uranium extraction but..NO it will not expose the Australian or Global public any un-safe levels of radiation. There IS always background radiation and some areas in the world are 10 times higher than the accepted norm. There IS a safe level of radiation, including all types (Alpha, Beta and Gamma) that humans are exposed to. Roxby Downs is one of the lowest in the world. This is not going to change.

There is so much wrong with this video:

1:00 is no where near olympic dam. Olympic dam is in the middle of a desert.

2:22 you do mine to extract yellow cake. You mine to extract Uranium minerals and then proccess it to turn it into yellow cake.

5:20 is not a birth defect it is known as ascites. The result of severe starvation.

None of the movies shown are from Olympic Dam.
